“Most people approach aerobic exercise the way they leave a tip: spending the bare minimum.”
Jumping rope can burn over 800 calories an hour. But for best results, skip the high jumping and keep things 1–2 inches off the ground. The higher you jump, the slower you swing the rope, the fewer jumps you make, and the fewer calories you burn.
You’ve probably noticed running on a treadmill is easier than running outside or on a track. That's because the treadmill’s motor takes over some of the work by pulling the surface—and you—along. To compensate, consider tilting the treadmill up to a 1% incline.
Need encouragement to reach more than 20 minutes of aerobic exercise? Pick a number between 25–35 that means something to you. It can be anything—your best age, a favorite player’s jersey number, even the number of pounds you want to lose! As long as it’s personal, you'll be more driven to reach it.
If I want to combine cardio with weight training, which should come first?
I recommend doing cardio after weight training. Weight training will elevate your heart rate some (so you'll be working toward your 20+ minutes) and it’s safer to tire out on a treadmill or stair climber than with 20 pounds of iron over your head or chest!
